If you’ve ever tried to book a cruise by yourself for the first time, you know how overwhelming it can be. There are so many cruise lines to choose from and they all claim to have the best food, entertainment, and service. But not all cruises are created equal, and finding the right one depends a lot on what kind of traveler you are.
I’ve personally sailed on Norwegian and Princess, and I’m about to sail on Celebrity soon so I’ve gotten a feel for how different the vibes and experiences can be. Whether you’re looking for an adventure filled family trip, a quiet escape, or a luxurious foodie experience, there’s a cruise line that fits your style. So let’s break down the major cruise lines and which ones are the best match for different types of travelers!
🚢 We’ll cover these cruise lines:

🚢 Royal Caribbean: Best for Adventure and Families

If you love action packed vacations with nonstop entertainment, Royal Caribbean it is! Their ships are basically floating theme parks! We’re talking about surf simulators, zip lines, rock climbing walls, ice skating rinks and even bumper cars. The Icon-class ships (like Icon of the Seas and the soon to launch Star of the Seas – August 2025) are now the biggest cruise ships in the world. These ships have whole neighborhoods, a Central Park with real trees, a massive waterpark and more pools than any other cruise ship.
Based on guests reviews, Royal Caribbean’s food has improved over the years. The main dining room is solid but the specialty restaurants (like Chops Grille and Izumi) are excellent. Included food at the buffet and quick service spots are pretty consistent. Their private islands, Perfect Day at CocoCay and Labadee, offer free lunch (think burgers, tacos, and fresh fruit) and if you have a drink package it works on the island too which is a huge plus.
✅ Best for:
✔️ Families with kids and teens
✔️ Thrill-seekers who want lots of activities
✔️ Multi-generational groups (everyone will find something to do)
🚫 Skip it if:
❌ You prefer smaller, quieter ships because these are BIG and busy! Unless you go on their older ships.
❌ You’re not into the “theme park at sea” vibe
🌊 Celebrity: Best for Modern Luxury and Couples

I’m about to sail on Celebrity and I’m really excited because it’s known for offering a more elevated experience. Celebrity has a sleek and modern vibe with a focus on excellent food and a more relaxed atmosphere. Their Edge-class ships (like Celebrity Beyond) have stunning architecture and an adults-only pool deck. It’s not as loud or kid focused as Royal Caribbean or Carnival and it’s more about unwinding and enjoying the finer things.
Celebrity has a strong focus on food with high quality options even in the main dining rooms. Specialty dining includes high end options like Fine Cut Steakhouse and Eden Restaurant, and unique dining experiences like Le Petit Chef (where your meal is part of an animation show!).
Celebrity is part of the Royal Caribbean Group so they also offer itineraries that stop at Perfect Day at Coco Cay in the Bahamas and Labadee in Haiti.
✅ Best for:
✔️ Couples and honeymooners
✔️ Foodies who want high quality dining options
✔️ Travelers looking for a quieter and modern atmosphere
🚫 Skip it if:
❌ You want tons of family friendly activities
❌ You prefer more casual or party vibes
🏝️ Norwegian: Best for Flexibility and Dining Variety

I’ve sailed on Norwegian and what I love about it is the freestyle dining: no fixed times, no assigned tables, and lots of variety. Norwegian ships have tons of specialty dining options and the entertainment is top notch (some ships have Broadway style shows!). Their newest ships like the Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva have stunning modern designs. It’s a good mix of fun and relaxation without feeling too crowded or over the top.
Norwegian’s private island, Great Stirrup Cay, is small but beautiful. Food is included and you can use your drink package on the island.
Dining is a strong point for Norwegian. The specialty options (like Cagney’s Steakhouse and Le Bistro) are excellent but even the buffet and main dining rooms are pretty good and solid.
✅ Best for:
✔️ Foodies who want dining flexibility
✔️ Couples and solo travelers
✔️ Casual travelers who don’t want a strict schedule
🚫 Skip it if:
❌ You prefer traditional dining with the same waiter each night
❌ You’re looking for a super quiet and elegant vibe
🏰 Disney: Best for Families with Young Kids
Disney is exactly what you’d expect: magical. Their ships are designed with families in mind from the Disney themed staterooms to the character meet and greets and Broadway style shows. Kids have their own activity clubs and adults can escape to adults-only pools and lounges. Disney cruises are expensive but they have some of the best service and family friendly entertainment at sea.
✅ Best for:
✔️ Families with young kids
✔️ Disney fans of all ages
✔️ Travelers looking for high end family experiences
🚫 Skip it if:
❌ You don’t have kids or don’t care about Disney characters
❌ You want a more adult focused trip
🌍 MSC: Best for Budget and European Vibes

MSC is growing fast in the U.S. Their ships are large, modern and beautifully designed featuring elegant interiors, expansive pool decks and plenty of fun activities for all ages. Guests love the stylish lounges and the lively nightlife including themed parties and live music.
MSC shines when it comes to authentic Italian cuisine with fresh pizza and Mediterranean flavors. They offer great value for the money and their luxurious MSC Yacht Club provides an elevated experience with private dining, butler service and exclusive amenities.
The upcoming MSC World America (launching April 12, 2025) is expected to bring a more American friendly experience while keeping MSC’s signature European elegance.
Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve is a stunning private island with crystal clear waters, white sandy beaches and a focus on sustainability. Food is included and while drinks cost extra unless you have a package. The tropical setting and relaxing atmosphere make it a highlight of any Caribbean itinerary.
✅ Best for:
✔️ Budget conscious travelers
✔️ International vibes
✔️ Couples looking for modern ships
🚫 Skip it if:
❌ You’re looking for a more American style dining
❌ You prefer American style service and entertainment
🍸 Virgin Voyages: Best for Adults and Nightlife
Virgin Voyages is adults-only and geared toward an open minded party loving crowd and it’s all about nightlife and trendy atmosphere. Their ships have no buffets, focusing instead on high end, made to order food from 20+ restaurants which are all included in the fare. There’s no dress code or formal nights, giving guests the freedom to wear what makes them feel good.
Entertainment includes live music, immersive performances, themed parties (like Scarlet Night), and unique nightlife experiences. It’s more about the vibe than the destination, with a heavy focus on socializing and fun. The Beach Club at Bimini is a highlight, offering a private and upscale beach retreat with DJ sets and an infinity pool, exclusive to Virgin Voyages cruisers.
Unlike many cruise lines, Wi-Fi, basic drinks (soda, juices, coffee), tips and fitness classes are all included. The ships also feature gyms, wellness programs and spa experiences, making it great for travelers who enjoy both partying and self care.
Just know the crowd is more liberal, so if you prefer a more conservative vibe, this might not be the best fit
✅ Best for:
✔️ Young couples and singles
✔️ Foodies
✔️ Nightlife lovers
🚫 Skip it if:
❌ You prefer more traditional cruising and conservative folks.
❌ You’re looking for family friendly options (Kids are not allowed on Virgin).
🍹 Carnival: Best for Budget Friendly Fun

Carnival is all about fun and casual vibes and it’s usually one of the most affordable cruise options. Their ships are colorful and lively with poolside parties, waterslides, comedy clubs, and Guy Fieri’s Burger Joint (which is included!). It’s not fancy but it’s laid back and social. Think spring break energy but for all ages. Their biggest ships, Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration, and Carnival Jubilee, feature roller coasters (yes, roller coasters at sea!), water slides and vibrant poolside parties.
Short Carnival cruises (3–5 nights) are very budget friendly but tend to attract a younger crowd and have more of a party atmosphere. Longer itineraries (7+ nights) are a bit more laid back and attract more families and older travelers.
Carnival’s new private island opening in July 2025, Celebration Key, won’t accept the Cheers! beverage package on land so you’ll have to pay separately for drinks. Their other island, Half Moon Cay, is known for its powdery white sand and calm waters.
Guy’s Burger Joint and BlueIguana Cantina are solid free options. The main dining room is hit or miss but specialty restaurants like Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse and Bonsai Teppanyaki are known to be excellent.
✅ Best for:
✔️ Budget conscious travelers
✔️ First time cruisers who want a relaxed vibe
✔️ Groups of friends looking to party
🚫 Skip it if:
❌ You prefer quieter and more upscale experiences
❌ You’re not into loud music and party vibes
👸 Princess: Best for Relaxation and Traditional Cruising

I’ve also sailed on Princess and it has more of a classic cruise vibe. The focus is on relaxation and elegant dining. Their MedallionClass technology makes everything easier: you can order drinks from your phone, track your family on board and unlock your room hands free.
Princess Cruises receives a lot of praise for its elegant atmosphere, spacious outdoor areas, and comfortable staterooms. Their Sanctuary retreat is a favorite among those looking for a quiet and adults only escape and the Movies Under the Stars adds a unique touch to nighttime entertainment. Guests love Alfredo’s Pizzeria, the International Café and the flexibility of traditional or anytime dining. Their itineraries are also a major highlight particularly in Alaska and Europe, where Princess is known for immersive experiences and scenic cruising. Plus, their service and crew are often praised for being friendly and attentive.
✅ Best for:
✔️ Older couples and mature travelers
✔️ Relaxation and quiet
✔️ Traditional cruising with set dining options
🚫 Skip it if:
❌ You want more high energy nightlife
❌ You’re cruising with young kids
👑 Cunard: Best for Traditional Luxury and Formal Atmosphere
Cunard is the most traditional cruise line. Think afternoon tea, ballroom dancing, and formal dress codes. Their flagship ship, Queen Mary 2, is the only ocean liner offering regular transatlantic crossings and the experience is centered around elegance and sophistication.
Cunard follows a class system for dining with different restaurants assigned based on your cabin category. It’s all about polished service and a refined atmosphere. Cunard’s dining is upscale and British influenced. The Queens Grill and Britannia Restaurant are highly rated and the afternoon tea service is a must try.
✅ Best for:
✔️ Traditional cruisers who enjoy formality
✔️ Luxury travelers looking for a quiet and elegant experience
✔️ History buffs (sailing on the Queen Mary 2 is a bucket list item!)
🚫 Skip it if:
❌ You prefer a more casual and relaxed atmosphere
❌ You’re not interested in dressing up for dinner (formal nights are a big deal here)
🎶 Holland America: Best for Relaxation and Music Lovers
Holland America attracts an older and more mature crowd and offers a more refined and laid back atmosphere. Their ships are smaller and more traditional in design, focusing on enrichment and relaxation rather than big thrills. The Music Walk is a standout feature with live performances from BB King’s Blues Club, Lincoln Center Stage and Rolling Stone Rock Room. Holland America is also known for its Alaska cruises offering some of the best itineraries and shore excursions in the region.
The dining is sophisticated and varied with standout specialty options like Tamarind (Asian fusion) and Pinnacle Grill(steakhouse). Included dining is well executed but the atmosphere is more reserved compared to Royal Caribbean or Carnival.
✅ Best for:
✔️ Mature travelers seeking a quieter and refined atmosphere
✔️ Music lovers who appreciate live performances
✔️ Travelers interested in scenic destinations like Alaska
🚫 Skip it if:
❌ You’re looking for high energy nightlife or lots of thrills
❌ You’re traveling with young kids (Holland America isn’t as kid focused)
